How IS an ESD Epoxy Floor Installed?

Here’s an overview of the steps involved in installing a 67,000-square-foot ESD epoxy floor for maximum durability and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection:

  • Step 1: The concrete floor is shot blasted to prepare the surface, ensuring optimal adhesion for the epoxy.
  • Step 2: Any voids in the concrete are chipped out and filled with an epoxy and sand mixture, creating a smooth, stable base.
  • Step 3: Floor joints are cut out and filled with a semi-rigid polyurea material, providing flexibility and protection against cracking.
  • Step 4: A primer coat of epoxy is applied at a 12-mil thickness, sealing and preparing the concrete surface.
  • Step 5: Any remaining concrete damage missed in earlier steps is now repaired with the epoxy and sand mixture.
  • Step 6: A second coat of 100% solids epoxy is applied at another 12 mil, adding depth and durability.
  • Step 7Copper grounding tape is installed between the floor and electrical outlets to enable effective electrostatic discharge.
  • Step 8: A topcoat of high-solids polyurethane is applied at 4 mil, protecting against wear, chemicals, and impacts.
  • Step 9: An electrician grounds the copper tape to wall outlets, finalizing the ESD functionality of the floor.

This rigorous process ensures a high-performance, durable, and electrostatic-safe floor ideal for sensitive industrial environments.
