What Are Electrostatic Dissipative Floors?
ESD flooring, or Electrostatic Dissipative flooring, is an industrial flooring system that prevents damage to electronics by safely discharging static electricity. As people move across the floor, electrostatic charges build up—ESD flooring grounds these charges to eliminate the risk of damage to sensitive equipment.
These specialized systems create a grounded surface that continuously disperses the electrical charges. They’re essential in environments where static discharge can interrupt operations or harm delicate electronics. Multiple flooring types—like resinous coatings, vinyl or rubber tiles, and ESD carpet—can be engineered for static control. Each option has unique benefits and considerations depending on the facility’s needs.
Resinous ESD coating systems offer the highest level of static protection. These systems can be as simple as a multilayer epoxy system or may include other materials such as urethane or cement. Installers embed conductive copper strips between the resinous layers, allowing electricians to connect the floor to multiple earth grounding points. Because the ESD elements are part of the coating’s chemical structure, these floors deliver consistent performance with no hot spots or dead zones.
