Wax and Residue on Conductive Floors

DA Pam 385-64 prohibits sweeping compounds containing wax or oil and cleaning agents that leave residue on conductive floors. DoD Manual 4145.26 phrases its wax restriction differently: wax-containing sweeping compounds are prohibited if the wax can reduce conductivity.

Army restrictions on wax, oil, and cleaning residue

Edition
24 July 2023

DA Pam 385-64, Ammunition and Explosives Safety Standards (24 July 2023), prohibits:

  • Sweeping compounds containing wax or oil on conductive floors.
  • Soaps, detergents, and solvents that leave a residue when used to clean conductive floors.

The pamphlet requires conductive floors to remain clean, dry, and free of nonconductive material. Appendix E-2 also requires conductive floors, mats, and runners to be free of paint or other nonconductive coatings.

See our Army conductive-floor requirements guide for the related inspection and testing requirements.

DoD restriction on wax that can reduce conductivity

Clause
C3.5.5
Edition
13 Mar 2008, Change 2

DoD Manual 4145.26, DoD Contractor’s Safety Manual for Ammunition and Explosives (13 March 2008, incorporating Change 2 dated 31 August 2018), states in C3.5.5 that personnel must not use sweeping compounds containing wax on conductive floors if the wax can reduce conductivity.

The Army prohibition on sweeping compounds containing wax or oil has no such condition.

See our DoD conductive-floor guide for the broader floor requirements.
