Wrist Straps in Place of Conductive Floors

DoD Manual 4145.26 permits conductive wrist straps to replace conductive floors and shoes for grounding personnel at small scale and isolated operations when justified by hazard analysis.

This permission appears in paragraph C6.4.7.2 of the DoD Contractor’s Safety Manual for Ammunition and Explosives, dated 13 March 2008 and incorporating Change 2 of 31 August 2018.

DoD Manual 4145.26 requires operators using wrist straps to test them before each use (whenever removed and re-worn) and record the results.

Resistance range and measurement path

Range
250,000–1,200,000 ohms
Path
Opposite hand to ground

Under DoD Manual 4145.26, resistance while the operator is wearing the wrist strap must be at least 250,000 ohms and no more than 1,200,000 ohms, measured from the opposite hand to ground.

See the DoD conductive-floor guide for the broader floor and footwear requirements.
