Both Table 2 Qualification Limits

A footwear/flooring system used for personnel grounding must meet both qualification limits in ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 Table 2: system resistance below 1.0 × 109 ohms and peak body voltage below 100 volts. Meeting the resistance limit alone does not qualify the system.

Craftsman Concrete helps facilities identify which measurements their testing records cover and organize the resulting reports into project closeout documentation. Floor-resistance results are identified separately from person–footwear–flooring results so the facility’s ESD program team can distinguish component testing from system qualification.

Both Table 2 limits must be met

Qualification measurementTest methodRequired limit
System resistance, measured with a person wearing the footwear on the flooringANSI/ESD STM97.1-2025Below 1.0 × 109 ohms
Peak body voltage generated with the footwear/flooring combinationANSI/ESD STM97.2-2016Below 100 volts

The resistance measurement includes the person

ANSI/ESD STM97.1-2025 measures the electrical system resistance of a person wearing footwear or foot grounders while standing on a flooring system.

A resistance measurement on the flooring alone, or on the footwear alone, is a different measurement. Neither replaces the person–footwear–flooring system result.

Each combination needs its own qualification

S20.20-2021 requires product qualification for each footwear and flooring type combination used by the organization. Request both test results for every combination being qualified.

The S20.20 footwear/flooring qualification guide explains when qualification must occur, which qualification routes are permitted, and what conditioning and records are required.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 Table 2 requires both system resistance below 1.0 × 10⁹ ohms under ANSI/ESD STM97.1 and peak body voltage below 100 volts under ANSI/ESD STM97.2 for a footwear/flooring system used for personnel grounding.

No. ANSI/ESD STM97.1 measures a person wearing footwear or foot grounders while standing on the flooring. A flooring-only resistance result does not measure that complete electrical path.

No. S20.20-2021 requires qualification for each footwear and flooring type combination used by the organization. A result for one pairing does not qualify a different footwear type on that floor.
