What an ESD Floor or Footwear/Flooring Test Report Should Contain

An electrostatic discharge (ESD) flooring test report should identify the test method and testing stage, then include the measurements, conditions and supporting records required by that method. Floor-resistance testing, person/footwear/floor resistance testing and walking body-voltage testing have different reporting requirements.

Craftsman Concrete supplies a written digital report for every direct test and assembles project-specific installation closeout documentation. The required testing and records are defined by the applicable method, specification and testing scope. Our ESD flooring documentation and closeout capabilities explain how test results, floor locations, acceptance criteria and supporting records are brought together.

Compare reporting requirements by method

All four methods below call for measured values, the test date, and minimum and maximum results. Their remaining fields, summary statistics and diagram requirements differ.

This table highlights the distinctions; it does not replace each method’s complete reporting requirements.

Test methodReporting provisions coveredKey reporting distinctions
ANSI/ESD STM7.1-2020Flooring-system resistance reports, section 6.3Report resistance values, test voltage, environmental conditions, conditioning duration, equipment and the flooring assembly tested. Applied or installed results also require a diagram of approximate electrode positions and ground connections.
ANSI/ESD STM97.1-2025Installed-floor procedure, section 6.3.4Report the flooring and footwear identities, testing organization, equipment, conditions and all measured data points. Minimum and maximum resistance values are reported separately for both feet, the right foot and the left foot, for each 500 square meters.
ANSI/ESD STM97.2-2016Qualification, section 5.2.4; installed or applied material, section 5.3.2Report test parameters and the prescribed highest voltage readings. Both stages summarize the minimum, maximum and mean of absolute values. Installed or applied material reporting also requires a diagram of approximate test locations and ground connections.
ASTM F150-25Qualification, section 9.1; installed testing, section 9.2Report test-area size in square feet, date, number of tests, all point-to-point and point-to-ground resistance values, and their minimum and maximum values. Sections 9.1.1 and 9.2.1 also specify reporting “in ohms and voltage.”

Use the reporting clause for the actual test stage

STM97.1 has separate procedures for pre-installation qualification, new footwear on an existing qualified floor, and an installed floor without the relevant prior evaluation. The STM97.1 row above covers the installed-floor procedure in section 6.3; its reporting clause should not be treated as a universal checklist for every STM97.1 evaluation.

STM97.2 also distinguishes qualification reports from reports for installed or applied material. Qualification reporting includes at least nine voltages: the three highest from each of three tests, regardless of polarity. Installed or applied material reporting includes fifteen voltages: the three highest from each of five tests.

The guides to reported walking-voltage values and installed-floor walking-voltage testing explain those requirements in context.

Preserve the readings and the information needed to interpret them

Minimum and maximum values do not replace the underlying measurements when the method requires all measured data.

For STM7.1, the report identifies the components of the flooring system and the substrate to which the sample was applied. It also records specified conditions and any departures from the method.

The STM7.1 test-report requirements provide the detailed fields, including the diagram required for applied or installed results.

Distinguish required fields from recommended additions

STM97.1-2025 section 6.3.4 distinguishes fields that shall be reported from four that should be reported:

  • Setup verification data.
  • Sock composition.
  • Resistance measurement test voltage.
  • Equipment calibration due date.

Those four fields are recommendations under that clause. A project specification may separately require additional documentation, so confirm the project’s reporting obligations as well as the test method’s requirements.

Connect test reports to qualification and closeout records

ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 requires qualification records to identify the test method, results and test limits, regardless of the qualification route used. The records must also include the environmental conditioning defined by the test method, and the product qualification plan must state where the records are kept (section 7.3).

When defining the closeout package, identify:

  • The method, edition and testing stage each report covers.
  • The flooring area or footwear/flooring combination represented.
  • The applicable acceptance criteria.
  • The required supporting records and report format.
  • Who receives and retains the completed documentation.

Frequently asked questions

No. STM7.1-2020 section 6.3.1 requires minimum and maximum values but does not require an average or median. STM97.2-2016 requires the minimum, maximum and mean of the absolute voltage values. Use the summary statistics specified by the applicable method.

STM7.1-2020 requires approximate electrode positions and ground connections for applied or installed results (section 6.3.2). STM97.2-2016 requires approximate test locations and ground connections for installed or applied material results (section 5.3.2). These requirements should not be generalized to every report covered on this page.
