Carry the polishing process to the perimeter

Polished concrete needs a consistent appearance across the open floor and along its edges. Walls, columns and adjoining finishes require dedicated edge work and coordination with the surrounding construction.

At Craftsman Concrete, we include representative edge work in the on-site sample. We review how the perimeter relates to the main floor and establish the intended appearance before proceeding across the project.

Edge work follows the grinding, honing and polishing sequence. It is not simply a final pass after the open floor is finished.

Where ACI SPEC-310.1-20 applies, it requires progressive edge work through these stages:

StageEdge requirement
GrindingProgressively grind edges to match the main floor area
HoningProgressively hone edges along walls and around abutments
PolishingProgressively polish edges along walls and around abutments

The Concrete Polishing Council’s guide specification calls for a consistent visual appearance from wall to wall. Its equipment provisions describe edge machines that produce results without noticeable differences from the main floor equipment.

These requirements apply through the selected project specification. Our ACI 310.1-20 specification guide explains that framework.

Plan edges, transitions and protection

We use the sample to establish the perimeter finish before the room is complete: it shows the edge beside the open floor, and ACI requires slab-edge polishing in the mockup without setting a numerical visual tolerance. Transitions to other flooring are agreed with the project team before polishing reaches them, and adjoining surfaces are protected during preparation.

Approve the edge appearance in the sample

The sample should show the edge beside the open floor so the project team can judge the relationship between them.

ACI SPEC-310.1-20 requires slab-edge polishing in the mockup. It defines edge polishing as producing an appearance similar to the open areas of the room; the cited provisions do not establish a numerical visual tolerance.

Craftsman uses the sample to establish the expected perimeter finish rather than leaving that decision until the room is complete. Our polished concrete mockup guide explains how sample approval guides the installation.

Coordinate transitions to other finishes

Where polished concrete meets another flooring material, agree on a clean transition with the project team before polishing reaches the adjoining finish. The selected detail and approved sample establish the intended appearance.

Protect walls and adjacent surfaces

Protect adjoining surfaces during preparation and coordinate access for the edge equipment. Where ACI SPEC-310.1-20 applies, liquid barriers at sill plates and floor penetrations protect the slab and adjacent floors from liquid intrusion.

Our silica-control guide explains the dust controls used during grinding and polishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Craftsman carries the grinding and polishing process to the perimeter using dedicated edge equipment. We review representative edge work in the on-site sample to establish the intended appearance.

ACI SPEC-310.1-20 describes an appearance similar to the open floor, while the CPC guide calls for wall-to-wall consistency. The approved sample establishes the expected result; these provisions do not provide a numerical edge-appearance tolerance.

The cited ACI dimension does not authorize one. It requires edge equipment designed to work within ¼ inch of vertical surfaces. Edge appearance and progressive grinding, honing and polishing remain separate requirements.

Yes. A representative edge helps establish the expected relationship between the perimeter and the main floor. ACI SPEC-310.1-20 expressly requires edge polishing in the mockup where that specification applies.
