Check experience on comparable projects
Evaluate a polished concrete installer in three separate areas: experience on similar projects, qualified supervision during the work, and manufacturer training or approval for the products applied.
The requirements below come from the Concrete Polishing Council (CPC) guide specification, ACI SPEC-310.1-20 and individual project or manufacturer specifications. Apply the requirements adopted for the project. Our preinstallation coordination guide places qualification review alongside submittals, mockups and scheduling.
| Source | Experience documentation |
|---|---|
| Concrete Polishing Council (CPC) guide specification | Five completed projects similar in design, products and extent, with successful in-service performance and sufficient production capability, facilities and personnel. |
| ACI SPEC-310.1-20, §1.5.5.1 | A list of five projects of similar type, size and complexity performed over the preceding three years. |
| Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) polished concrete specification | An installer experienced in the work and specializing in installations similar to the project. This provision states no project count or minimum number of years. |
The CPC guide’s five-project count is a value the project specifier can edit. Under ACI, the project list is one part of the qualification submittal, alongside personnel and training records. The submittals and documentation guide covers the submission package.
Check qualifications beyond project experience
Beyond project experience, the sources set separate requirements for a competent supervisor during the work and for manufacturer approval or training for the products applied. A Husqvarna SUPERFLOOR approval does not replace them. Under ACI, the Contractor submits the qualification data, and the Owner’s Representative is responsible for ensuring contractors on site meet the requirements.
Confirm qualified supervision during polishing
- Who
- Competent supervisor during the work
- Source
- CPC guide, ACI §1.5.5.3
The CPC guide requires a competent supervisor at the project while the specified work is in progress. It identifies current Concrete Polishing Association of America (CPAA) Craftsman Level I or higher, CPC Craftsman, or equivalent certification.
ACI §1.5.5.3 requires verification of a competent supervisor present during the specified work and certified as a CPC Craftsman or equivalent, unless otherwise specified. The clause does not define which credentials qualify as equivalent.
These are supervisor requirements. They should not be read as a requirement that every crew member hold the same credential.
Verify manufacturer approval and training separately
- Who
- Installers, for each product applied
- Source
- CPC guide, ACI §1.5.5.2, APS
The CPC guide requires manufacturer approval to apply the liquid-applied products. ACI §1.5.5.2 requires certification of installer training from the manufacturer of each product.
That product training is separate from the supervisor’s CPC or equivalent credential. Neither replaces the company-experience requirement.
The APS specification takes a different approach: installers must be trained and hold current certifications in the systems to be applied, if those certifications are available. Alternatively, it permits CPAA Craftsman Level 1 or higher certification.
Distinguish brand approval from project qualifications
- Who
- Operator of the branded floor
- Source
- Husqvarna SUPERFLOOR guide
The Husqvarna guide states that, for a floor to be acknowledged as a Husqvarna SUPERFLOOR, the operator must be a certified or approved Husqvarna SUPERFLOOR contractor.
That approval applies to the branded floor designation. It does not replace the experience, supervision or product-training documents required by a separately adopted project specification.
Assign qualification review
- Who
- Contractor submits; Owner’s Representative ensures
- Source
- ACI §1.5.5 and Section 1.8.1
Under ACI §1.5.5, the Contractor submits the installer qualification data. Section 1.8.1 assigns the Owner’s Representative responsibility for ensuring that contractors on site meet the qualification requirements in §1.5.
See the ACI specification guide for adoption and project-specific requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Under ACI SPEC-310.1-20, manufacturer training certification for each product is a separate submittal item from the supervisor’s CPC Craftsman or equivalent credential. The project-experience records are also required separately.
ACI §1.5.5.1 requires a list of five projects of similar type, size and complexity completed over the preceding three years. This is one part of the installer qualification submittal.
Not exclusively. Unless otherwise specified, ACI §1.5.5.3 accepts CPC Craftsman certification or an equivalent for the competent supervisor present during the work. The clause does not define equivalence.
