Keep the measurement stages separate

Take required pre-treatment gloss readings before applying the stain guard or other protective treatment. A reading taken afterward measures the treated surface and does not replace the earlier check.

Craftsman Concrete coordinates appearance testing with the installation sequence so the required readings are recorded before treatment proceeds.

StageWhat the reading describes
Before protective treatmentThe polished surface before the treatment is added
After treatment and any specified burnishingThe finished surface with the treatment in place

ACI SPEC-310.1-20 requires specified specular gloss measurements before protectant application, with the result conforming to the approved mockup.

Gloss-enhancing treatments can increase gloss values. A reading over that treatment therefore does not establish how much gloss the underlying mechanical polishing achieved.

Our gloss, image clarity and haze guide explains the separate appearance measurements.

Coordinate treatment and burnishing

After the required pre-treatment checks, apply the selected treatment and allow its specified drying time before burnishing. Follow the product’s instructions; there is no single drying interval for every stain guard.

ACI SPEC-310.1-20 also addresses burnishing after treatment to achieve the project’s specified gloss and image-clarity levels. That later finishing step serves a different purpose from recording the required pre-protectant gloss.

Our stain-guard guide covers treatment selection and application.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The final reading describes the treated surface. Where the specification requires a pre-treatment reading, record it before the stain guard is applied.

The project’s testing requirements determine which readings are needed. Craftsman establishes the required measurements and their timing with the project team before installation.
